Is there something wrong with her?

I'm 18 and so is my girlfriend. I used to think of her as quite moody and she can be really irrational. But now I think it may be something more serious. The more she trusts me the more she lets me into her secret posessions. Like her notebooks and sketchbooks and things and she tells me things about her past. I love her very much and I'm worried about her because she only shows me a few things which aren't so bad but theres a collection of stuff she wouldn't let me see so one day while she was showering I had a look. I feel awful and I know it's so disrespectful but I was really really concerned. In the collection there are many diagrams and drawings which are quite morbid and depressing. and in a journal I found which she's been writing in since she was 14 is filled with things she's written about how she sometimes feels. I thought she may be suffering from depression at the moment but you can't suffer from it for years can you? And also there's nothing really in her life that can make her feel like that. I don't think theres reason for it. I know she can't be doing it for attension because she wouldn't let me look at this stuff if I hadn't have cruelly had a look behind her back. I don't know what to do. I don't want to accuse her of having something wrong with her because it will upset her and I don't kno whether to tell her I looked at her secret stuff.

My mother has depression and it can last for years and is very serious. It doesn't really have to have a cause I don't think, some people are more affected by things than others.
Your girlfriend needs help, I don't want to worry you but my mother tried to kill herself many times before she went to get help and it's just lucky that there was always someone there to get her to hospital or stop her from overdosing.

thanks a lot for your comments. Particularly Sarah Rose hopefully you return to look at this to answer me a question if you don't mind me asking but what about your mother told you that she was suffering from depression? sometimes it's difficult to tell whether someone is sad or clinically depressed... I'm not even sure if my girlfriend can be suffering from it since she's young...

Yeh it can last for years and it doesn't have to have any cause at all (I've had it for almost 2 years, and I have absolutely no cause to have it.) Maybe just sit down with her one day and have a serious talk. Just ask her seriously "Are you ok?" and try to gradually get her to tell you. She can only begin to get help (and begin to get better) if someone knows about it, or if she tells someone.

yeah it can last for years, and it can occur at any age, im 13 ive had depression for 5 years, it went undiagnosed until 3 months back. talk to her x if things start to worry you and things get more out of hand call her gp and he/she will try find out whats wrong x :)
